Honus & Me is an exciting children's book by Dan Gutman. It was first published in 1997. This book is the very first story in his popular Baseball Card Adventures series. A TV movie called The Winning Season was even made from this book. It starred Matthew Modine. The book also includes interesting facts and old photos of Honus Wagner.
The Story of Honus & Me
Joe Stoshack loves baseball more than anything. He knows almost everything about the game. But he struggles to play well himself. One day, Joe gets a job cleaning out his neighbor Miss Young's attic. There, he makes an amazing discovery. He finds a very rare 1909 T-206 Honus Wagner baseball card. This card is known as the most valuable baseball card in the world!
Joe wants to make sure the card is real. He takes it to a collectible shop. The owner, Birdie Farrell, used to be a professional wrestler. Birdie tries to trick Joe into selling the card for only ten dollars. He pretends it's a card of a different player, Heinie Wagner. That night, Joe goes to sleep holding the special card. He wishes he could meet Honus Wagner in person.
Joe Meets a Baseball Legend
The next day, after one of his team's games, something incredible happens. Joe suddenly finds himself face-to-face with the famous baseball legend, Honus Wagner! They play catch together. Joe and Honus share their biggest dreams with each other. Joe's dream is to play in the major leagues someday. Honus's dream is to win the World Series.
Together, they travel back in time. They go to the seventh game of the World Series. Honus helps Joe feel better about himself. He helps Joe gain confidence in his baseball skills. Finally, Joe returns home. He feels much more hopeful about his future in baseball.
The Winning Season Movie
The book Honus & Me was made into a movie. The TV channel TNT first showed it on April 4, 2004. Matthew Modine played the role of Honus Wagner. Kristen Davis played his love interest. Mark Rendall starred as the young hero, Joe Stoshack.
