It's not a city or a town with its own local government, but rather a collection of homes and historical spots within Brown Township. A Look Back: Hope's Iron History

Many years ago, Hope was an important center for making iron. It had a large iron blast furnace. A blast furnace is a special kind of oven used to melt iron ore at very high temperatures to create iron metal. This iron was then used to make many different products.

A post office was opened in Hope in 1865. It was even named "Hope Furnace" because of the important iron-making site nearby. This post office helped connect the community to the rest of the world. However, it closed down in 1890, showing how the community changed over time.

Exploring Hope Today: Parks and Trails

Today, Hope is a gateway to some wonderful natural areas. Lake Hope State Park is very close by and even covers part of the original town site. The park gets its name from the community of Hope, showing its historical connection. This state park is a popular place for camping, fishing, hiking, and enjoying nature.

The Historic Hope Schoolhouse

Only two buildings remain from the original town of Hope. One of these is the historic Hope Schoolhouse. This was once a one-room schoolhouse, meaning all the students from different grades learned together in a single room.

Today, the Hope Schoolhouse has been carefully restored. It now serves as a visitors center for the area. You can find exhibits and educational programs here that teach about the history and culture of the region. It's also used for meetings and as a starting point for exploring the nearby trails.

The other remaining building is an old, abandoned church. It is located on Wheelabout Road, south of the schoolhouse. Unfortunately, this church is in very poor condition and is not open to visitors.

The Moonville Rail-Trail also passes right through Hope. This trail is built on an old railroad line and is popular for walking, running, and biking. Additionally, a trailhead for the backpacking trails within the Zaleski State Forest is located at the Hope Schoolhouse. This makes Hope a perfect starting point for longer adventures into the forest.
