Hope Temple

Hope Temple, whose real name was Alice Maude Davis, was an Irish songwriter and composer. She was born on December 27, 1859, and passed away on May 10, 1938. She was also known as Mrs. André Messager, as she married the famous French composer.

Life of Hope Temple

Alice Davis was born in Dublin, Ireland. She became known professionally as Hope Temple. When she was about 12 years old, her family moved to England. She started writing songs, called ballads, when she was only 14!

Hope first planned to become a pianist and studied music for that goal. However, she had an accident while riding a horse, which injured her. This injury meant she couldn't continue her dream of being a pianist.

She studied music with several teachers in London. Later, in the early 1890s, she continued her studies in Paris. There, she met and studied with André Messager, who would later become her husband.

In 1892, her musical play called The Wooden Spoon was performed in London. It was also shown in New York in 1893. Even though she wrote this play, she was mostly famous for her many popular songs. One of her songs, My Lady's Bower, is even mentioned in the famous book Ulysses by James Joyce.

In 1894, she helped André Messager write an opera called Mirette. The next year, in 1895, she became his second wife.

Hope Temple passed away in Folkestone, England.
