Felipe Horacio Vásquez Lajara (born October 22, 1860 – died March 25, 1936) was an important general and political leader in the Dominican Republic. He served as president several times. His supporters were called Horacistas. They were often rivals with the Jimenistas, who supported Juan Isidro Jimenes.

In 1888, Horacio Vásquez married Trina de Moya. She was a talented poet and writer from La Vega.

Horacio Vásquez: A Leader of the Dominican Republic

Horacio Vásquez played a big role in the history of the Dominican Republic. He was known for his military leadership and his efforts to lead the country. His time in politics saw many changes and challenges for the nation.

Early Life and Political Beginnings

Horacio Vásquez was born in 1860. He grew up to become a general. This meant he was a high-ranking officer in the country's military. His military background helped him become a strong political figure.

First Time as President

Vásquez first became president of a temporary government group. This was called the Provisional Government Junta. He held this role in 1899. He served again in this position between 1902 and 1903. These were short periods of leadership during times of change.

In 1914, he tried to become president for a full term. However, he lost that election to his rival, Juan Isidro Jimenes.

Becoming President

The Dominican Republic was occupied by U.S. military forces from 1916 to 1924. After the U.S. forces left, the country held a democratic election. This means people voted for their leader.

The US Occupation and Re-election

In 1924, Horacio Vásquez was chosen by the people to be president. He served from 1924 to 1930. This was a time when the country was trying to rebuild after the occupation. He worked to bring stability and progress.

End of His Presidency

In 1930, Horacio Vásquez's presidency ended. He was removed from power by General Rafael Trujillo. After this, Vásquez went to live in exile in Puerto Rico. Exile means being forced to live outside your home country.

His Legacy

Horacio Vásquez is remembered as a key figure in Dominican history. He led the country through difficult times. Today, a metro station in Santo Domingo is named after him. This shows his lasting importance.
