Expanding His Domain

Their domain, or territory, grew to 240,000 koku in Izumo Province. A koku was a way to measure the wealth of a domain. It was based on how much rice the land could produce. Sadly, Horio Tadauji died young in 1604, when he was only 26 years old. He passed away from a disease, even before his father, Horio Yoshiharu. This was a difficult time for the Horio family.
His Son, Horio Tadaharu
Because Tadauji died young, his son, Horio Tadaharu, became the new head of the family. However, Tadaharu was very young, only 9 years old at the time. His grandfather, Horio Yoshiharu, stepped in to guide him. Yoshiharu acted as a guardian and ruled the domain until his own death in 1611. This ensured that the Horio family's lands and power remained stable.
