Horio Yoshiharu (1542 – July 26, 1611) was an important Japanese daimyō. A daimyō was a powerful feudal lord. He lived during the Azuchi–Momoyama period and Edo periods. Horio Yoshiharu was also known as Horio Mosuke. He was chosen by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to be one of his three main advisors, called san-chūrō. He was also the first leader of the Matsue clan.

Horio Yoshiharu's Military Career
Horio Yoshiharu was a skilled warrior. He fought in many important battles. His bravery helped him rise through the ranks.
Serving Under Oda Nobunaga
Horio Yoshiharu first joined the service of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This happened after Hideyoshi saw Yoshiharu wrestling a wild boar. Yoshiharu then served Hideyoshi, who was working for Oda Nobunaga.
In 1567, Yoshiharu helped during the Siege of Inabayama Castle. This was when Oda Nobunaga attacked the castle. Later, in 1582, Yoshiharu carried out an order after the Battle of Tenmokuzan. He also helped investigate a death during the Siege of Takamatsu.
Serving Under Toyotomi Hideyoshi
After Oda Nobunaga died, Horio Yoshiharu became even more important. He was a trusted follower of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
In 1582, Yoshiharu fought bravely at the Battle of Yamazaki. He was also involved in other major battles. These included the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583.
In 1585, Yoshiharu took part in the Toyama campaign. This was a fight against Sassa Narimasa. In 1587, he joined the Kyūshū Campaign. For his service, he received a high court title.
In 1590, Hideyoshi rewarded Yoshiharu. He gave him land worth 120,000 koku (a measure of land value). This was for his success in the siege of Odawara. Later, Hideyoshi appointed Yoshiharu as one of his three main advisors. These advisors were called chūrō.
Serving Under Tokugawa Ieyasu
In 1598, Toyotomi Hideyoshi passed away. Horio Yoshiharu then decided to support Tokugawa Ieyasu. Ieyasu would later become the ruler of Japan.
In 1599, Yoshiharu gave his leadership role to his son, Horio Tadauji. Yoshiharu then retired to a smaller domain. This land was worth 50,000 koku.
In 1600, Yoshiharu joined Ieyasu's forces. He was injured in a skirmish before the main battle. Because of his injury, he could not fight in the Battle of Sekigahara. This was a very important battle. However, Ieyasu still rewarded him. Yoshiharu received land worth 240,000 koku. This was because his son, Tadauji, fought bravely in his place.
Later Life and Death
In 1604, Horio Yoshiharu's son, Tadauji, died at a young age. Yoshiharu's grandson, Horio Tadaharu, became the new head of the family. Tadaharu was only nine years old. So, Yoshiharu guided him as a guardian. He continued to lead until his own death in 1611.
Horio Yoshiharu was well-liked by many people. He was known for being calm and kind. People even called him "Hotoke no Mosuke". This means "Mosuke the Saint".
The family temple of the Horio clan is Shunkō-in. It is located in Kyoto Prefecture.
