Hormiguero, Arizona facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hormiguero was a village from the 1800s. Its name means "anthill" in Spanish. Sometimes, it was also called Ormejera No. 1 in old records. This name might have been a slightly mixed-up American version of Hormiguero.

This village was one of several Pima Villages that existed in the 19th century. It was located along the Gila River in what is now the Gila River Indian Community in Pinal County, Arizona. The Pima people are a Native American tribe who have lived in this area for a very long time.

History of Hormiguero

The village of Hormiguero was first mentioned in a report from the Mexican Army in 1825. Back then, it was called El Hormiguero. The report said it was about 37 leagues (a unit of distance) from a city called Tucson. It was also located near other places like Buen Llano and La Tierra Amontonada. At that time, about 1,200 Pima people lived in the village.

Population Changes Over Time

Later, in 1858, the first American Indian Agency took a count of the people in the Pima Villages. Hormiguero was listed as Ormejera No. 1 and had a population of 643 people.

The next year, in 1859, the village was called Hormiguero again in the census. A census is an official count of how many people live in a place. In 1859, the population was 566. By the official 1860 Census, the number of people living in Hormiguero had changed to 510. These numbers show how the population of the village changed over a few years in the mid-1800s.
