A Look Back: When Hornsby Depot Started
The Hornsby Maintenance Depot first opened its doors in 1928. It was one of four new depots built as part of the Bradfield electrification plan. This big plan helped bring electric trains to Sydney. The other depots were in Mortdale, Flemington, and Punchbowl. The Punchbowl depot later closed down.
What's Inside: Tracks and Facilities
The Hornsby Maintenance Depot is a busy place with many tracks, called "roads," for trains.
- There are nine roads inside the main building, numbered 1 to 9.
- Outside, there are five more roads, numbered 11 to 15.
- Two of these outdoor roads (11 and 12) are raised up.
- Road 16 is a special area for washing trains.
- You'll also find several shorter outdoor tracks for storing trains.
- South of the main depot, there are 8 more tracks just for parking trains.
Trains can only enter the depot from the south side.
Trains That Visit Hornsby Depot
The Hornsby Maintenance Depot is a home base for several types of trains. These include:
- A (Waratah) sets
- T (Tangara) sets
- H (OSCAR) sets
These trains run on many important lines, such as the Central Coast, Northern, North Shore, and Western lines. The depot also does maintenance work, like repairs and check-ups, especially for the T (Tangara) sets.
