A Look Back at Hoskinsville's History

How Hoskinsville Got Its Name

Hoskinsville got its start a long time ago. In 1827, a post office opened there. A post office was a very important place back then. It was where people sent and received letters and packages. The first person in charge of this post office was a man named Colonel Erastus Hoskins. He was so important to the community that the town was named after him!

When the Town Was Planned

Even though the post office opened in 1827, the town itself wasn't officially "platted" until 1839. To "plat" a town means to draw a map showing where all the streets, lots for houses, and public spaces will be. It's like drawing a blueprint for a new neighborhood. This helped people know exactly where they could build their homes and businesses. The post office stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1910.
