The Hostetter Inn is a really old and special building located near Lisbon, Ohio, in the United States. It was built a long time ago, in the early 1830s, and used to be a place where travelers could stay, like a hotel. Today, it's recognized as a historic site because it has so much history.

What Makes the Hostetter Inn Special?

The Hostetter Inn is built mostly from strong brick. It sits on a solid base made of limestone, and its roof is covered with asphalt. You'll also see some wooden parts on the building. It's a simple structure, not built in a fancy, well-known style. This type of building is often called vernacular architecture, meaning it's a local, traditional style.

Exploring the Inn's Design

The front of the inn has two levels, or stories. Each story has five openings for windows and doors. The sides of the building rise up to a pointed shape called a gable.

Inside the inn, you can find many original details that have been kept over the years. For example, the fireplace mantels have fancy grooves called fluting. There's even an old oven built right into one of the fireplaces! The kitchen has delicate wooden molding (decorative trim), and the doors still have their antique latches and locks. These inside features are very important because it's rare to find old buildings in Ohio with so many original interior details still intact.

A Glimpse into the Inn's History

The Hostetter Inn was built in 1832. It got its name from the Hostetter family, who were the first owners and ran the inn for many years, even into the 1900s.

Why the Inn is So Important

What's amazing about the Hostetter Inn is how little it has changed over time. Except for a few tiny updates on the outside, the building looks almost exactly as it did when it was first built. This is quite unusual because most old houses in the area have been changed a lot over the years. Because of this, the old inn has become a very important part of the local area's history and buildings.

Recognizing its Historical Value

In 1980, the Hostetter Inn was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important for their history or architecture. The inn qualified for this list because of its unique design and its role in local history. It was seen as a major part of the business life in Hanover Township and the community of Guilford.
