Hot Coffee is a small, interesting place in Covington County, Mississippi, in the United States. It's known for its unique name and has some fun stories in local Mississippi history. Even though it's small, it's a well-known spot in the area. Sometimes, it shares the same mailing code as the nearby town of Collins.

The Story Behind the Name

The community of Hot Coffee began at a busy intersection. This was where two important travel paths met. One road went north and south, called Jackson's Military Road. The other went east and west, connecting Natchez to Fort St. Stephens.

Around 1870, a man named L.J. Davis built a store at this crossroads. He hung a coffee pot over his door to attract travelers. He advertised that he had "the best hot coffee around." His special coffee was made with fresh spring water and coffee beans from New Orleans. He used molasses drippings to sweeten it, and he never added cream. He believed cream would spoil the taste.

Local politicians and people traveling through would often stop at Davis's store. They would buy coffee for themselves and for others. Because his coffee was so popular, the whole community eventually became known as Hot Coffee. This unique name has often appeared on lists of unusual place names.

Local Landmarks and Mentions

West of Hot Coffee, there used to be a community of Old Order German Baptists. This area was famous for a place called "Martha's Kitchen." People loved Martha's Kitchen for its delicious pies and homemade meals.

In 2005, the famous National Geographic magazine wrote an article about Hot Coffee. They described it as:

  • A small community with farms, homes, and businesses.
  • These are spread out along a road called Highway 532.
  • This 12-mile stretch is known locally as Hot Coffee Road.
  • It runs from the town of Mount Olive to the historic crossroads.
