Discovering Hotel Blessing
A Special Place to Stay
Jonathan Edwards Pierce, who founded the town of Blessing, built Hotel Blessing. He wanted a comfortable place for people looking to buy land in the area to stay. It was also a good spot for traveling salespeople to rest. The hotel quickly became a busy center for the community.
Its Unique Look
The hotel has a special design called Mission Revival. This style often uses materials like adobe or plaster over brick. However, Hotel Blessing is unique because it uses an all-wood front, or facade. This makes it stand out from other buildings of its kind.
Through the Years
In the 1930s, the hotel was updated with new paint and finishes. During World War II, it became a popular spot for wives and girlfriends of soldiers. These soldiers were training at Camp Hulen in nearby Palacios, Texas.
After the war, Camp Hulen closed, and freight train service stopped. Because of these changes, the hotel stopped renting rooms in 1972.
A New Beginning
In 1977, Jonathan Pierce's grandson, Able Pierce, and his wife Ruth decided to fix up the hotel. They worked hard to make it new again and reopened its doors.
Today, the hotel is owned by the Blessing Historical Society. It has 25 rooms, and most of them have a semi-private bathroom or share one in the hall. The hotel also has a popular coffee shop. This is where people from the community often gather to talk about local events.
