Imagine stepping back in time to the 1700s! The House at 1010 Shuttle Meadow Road in Southington, Connecticut, is a special historic home. It was built around 1772, making it one of the oldest houses in town. This house is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This means it's officially recognized as a valuable part of American history.

What Does the House Look Like?

The house at 1010 Shuttle Meadow Road is a beautiful example of old-fashioned building. It stands on the south side of Shuttle Meadow Road in northern Southington. This road is now mostly homes. The house is set closer to the street than many newer buildings.

Building Style and Materials

This house is a two-and-a-half story building. It is made from wood and covered with clapboards, which are long, thin boards that overlap. The roof is interesting because it's different on each side. One side has a gabled roof, which means it forms a triangle. The other side has a hipped roof, which slopes down on all four sides.

The house sits on a strong foundation made of brownstone. Even the front step is made of this stone!

Front of the House

The front of the house, called the facade, has five sections, or bays. The main door is right in the middle. It's a fancy entrance! The doorway is framed by fluted pilasters, which are like flat columns with grooves. Above the door is a decorative piece called a corniced entablature.

On either side of the main door, you'll see wide windows called sidelight windows. These are quite unusual because they are double-wide. Inside the house, some of the original wide floorboards are still there. You can also see the old fireplaces, which were used for heating and cooking long ago.

A Glimpse into History

The House at 1010 Shuttle Meadow Road was built around 1772. This was before the American Revolutionary War even began! It's a great example of Georgian architecture. This style was popular in the American colonies during the 18th century. It often features balanced, symmetrical designs and classic details. The double-wide sidelight windows make this particular Georgian house stand out.

This house helps us understand what homes looked like hundreds of years ago. It shows us how people lived and built things in early America.
