The house at 13 Annis Street in Methuen, Massachusetts, is a special old building. It was built around 1880. This house is a great example of the small homes built for workers at the nearby Arlington Mills. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it is recognized as an important historical building.

What Does the House Look Like?

This house is located in a busy neighborhood in southern Methuen. You can find it on the north side of Annis Street. It sits between Tenney Street and Broadway, which is also called Massachusetts Route 28.

The house is a one-and-a-half story building. It is made of wood and has a pointed roof. There are two brick chimneys. The outside of the house is covered with modern siding. The front of the house has two main sections. The front door is on the right side. It has a small roof over it, held up by simple brackets.

On the left side, there is a bay window that sticks out. It has several sides, like a polygon. Above these, in the attic area, are two windows. When the house was studied in the 1980s, it looked a bit fancier. The roof edges used to stick out more. They had decorative brackets, a style called Italianate. The attic windows also had fancy frames with diamond shapes. The front door's small roof also had these Italianate brackets.

Why Was This House Built?

Annis Street was one of the first streets to grow with new homes. This happened because the Arlington Mills were expanding. The house is part of what is now called the Arlington Mills Historic District. This area is just west of Stevens Pond, near the Spicket River.

The Arlington Mills were very large. They hired thousands of people to work there. These workers lived in nearby towns like Lawrence and Methuen. However, the mills themselves did not own many homes for their workers. So, people called speculators built many inexpensive houses. They sold these homes to the woolen mill workers. You can find many similar houses in this area. The house at 13 Annis Street shows what these homes were like. Over time, some of its original decorations have been removed.
