Since the 1890s, people have called it the "House by the Side of the Road." This name comes from a famous poem by Sam Walter Foss. In 1980, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a very important historical building.

What the House Looks Like

The House by the Side of the Road is a 1+12-story house. This means it has one full floor and a half-story above it. It is built in a style called "Cape." This style is common for houses built in the late 1700s in New Hampshire.

The house has five windows across the front. The main door is in the middle. It also has a chimney made of brick. The outside of the house is covered with wooden boards called clapboards.

The house is located on the east side of School Street. It is a short walk north from the Tilton School. The house sits on a small piece of land with trees.

History of the House

This house was built around 1783. It is a great example of how houses were built back then. It shows the simple, local building style of the time.

The most interesting part of the house's history is its connection to Sam Walter Foss. He was a well-known American poet. Foss lived in this house from 1877 to 1878. At that time, he was a student at Tilton School, which was then called Tilton Seminary.

His famous poem, "The House by the Side of the Road," was inspired by his time living here. The poem talks about being a friend to everyone. Because of this poem, the house became known by its special name. It reminds people of the poet and his message.
