How New Zealand's Government Works
New Zealand's government is set up like many other countries. The House of Representatives is a very important part of it. It's where the people you elect go to represent you.
Who are the Members of Parliament?
The 120 people elected to the House are called Members of Parliament (MPs). Each MP represents a part of New Zealand. Their job is to speak for the people in their area. They also help make new laws and check on the government's work.
Making Laws
The main job of the House of Representatives is to create and pass laws. When a new law is needed, it is discussed and voted on by the MPs. If most MPs agree, the law can be passed. This process helps make sure laws are fair and good for the country.
The Prime Minister and Cabinet
The political party that wins the most seats in the House usually forms the government. The leader of this party becomes the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister then chooses other MPs to be part of the Cabinet. The Cabinet helps the Prime Minister run the country and make big decisions.
Elections in New Zealand
People in New Zealand vote to choose their MPs. These elections usually happen every three years. When you turn 18, you can vote for the people you want to represent you in the House of Representatives. Your vote helps decide who will be in charge of making laws for the country.
