The Houston Negro Hospital School of Nursing Building is an important historic school building in Houston, Texas. It is part of the Houston Negro Hospital complex, which is now called Riverside General Hospital. You can find it where Holman Avenue and Ennis Street meet.
This school was very special because it was the first one in Houston built to train Black nurses. The hospital it was connected to was also the first non-profit hospital for Black patients in Houston. This hospital gave Black doctors a place to work, as they often could not admit patients to other hospitals in the city due to segregation.
Building a Special School
In 1918, a kind person named Joseph S. Cullinan, who was a philanthropist from Houston, started a fund. He wanted to build a hospital with fifty beds. Later, J. S. Cullinan, who was an oilman from Texas, gave $80,000 more to help build the hospital. The City of Houston also donated the land for the project.
The building was designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Construction started in 1925. The school officially opened its doors in 1927. Even though the building was still being finished, a special dedication ceremony happened on June 19, 1926. This date was chosen to celebrate the 61st anniversary of Juneteenth.
The first person to lead the school was I.M. Terrell.
A Place in History
The Houston Negro Hospital School of Nursing Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 27, 1982. Being on this list means the building is recognized as an important part of American history and culture.
