Meet the Characters
- Stella Stebbings (Baldy) - Stella is the main character of the book. Her parents send her to Evergreen Summer Camp while they are on their honeymoon. She loves adventures and sometimes breaks the rules. Stella is also very caring and creative.
- Marzipan - Marzipan is one of Stella's roommates in the Emerald cabin. She becomes Stella's good friend. Marzipan is kind and loves to read books, but she can be a bit shy. The book describes her as "a bit large and lumpy."
- Louise - Louise is another one of Stella's Emerald roommates. She is quite snobby and very good at sports. Louise has long blonde hair and is very pretty. She comes from a rich family and wears fancy clothes.
- Karen - Karen is Louise's best friend. She is not as pretty as Louise. Karen often calls Stella names, like Baldy.
- Alan - Alan is one of the Emerald boys. He is an excellent swimmer and enjoys reading comic books. Alan becomes one of Stella's good friends at Evergreen Camp.
- Rosemary - Rosemary is another Emerald roommate. When Stella first meets her, she is a very shy five-year-old who does not speak. After Stella helps her find her lost toy donkey, Rosemary starts talking and becomes good friends with Stella.
- Janie - Janie is one of Stella's Emerald roommates and Rosemary's best friend. She is from the Seychelles islands. Janie also becomes good friends with Stella.
- James - James is one of the Emerald boys. He is a big boy who likes to speak in rhymes.
- Bilbo - Bilbo is another Emerald boy. He is around Rosemary's age and can be a bit annoying sometimes.
- Richard - Richard is the oldest boy in the Emerald cabin. It seems like he might have a crush on Louise.
- Brigadier - The Brigadier owns Evergreen Summer Camp. He lives in the tower room of the main house. Stella is scared of him at first. But after they meet and he helps her learn to swim, Stella starts to like him.
- Miss Hamer-Cotton - Miss Hamer-Cotton is the Brigadier's daughter. She is very bossy and organizes most of the camp activities. She acts like a strict older woman.
- Uncle Ron - Uncle Ron is in charge of all the fun activities. Alan and Stella gave him the nickname 'Uncle Pong' because his tracksuit often smelled.
- Jimbo - Jimbo is the instructor for judo at Evergreen Camp.
- Jilly - Jilly teaches macrame at the camp.
- Mrs Markham (Orange Overall/Purple Pinafore/Dotty Dress/Nylon Nightie) - Mrs. Markham is a camp staff member. She secretly takes care of a baby fox at the camp. She plans to release it back into the wild when it is old enough.
