This complex is a super fun place with an indoor Olympic-sized swimming pool, a tennis center, an athletic center, and lots of sports fields. It even has a peaceful natural area! History of the Complex
The complex first opened its doors in 1978. In 1993, it was renamed to honor Howard M. Terpenning. He was the General Manager of THPRD for a very long time, from 1959 until the end of 1992. Howard Terpenning passed away in 2014 when he was 83 years old.
Every year, the complex hosts a big three-part festival, usually in late July. This fun event includes the Party in the Park, the Beaverton Cultural Festival, and a Family Triathlon.
Awesome Facilities at the Complex
The Terpenning Recreation Complex has many cool places to play and exercise. It includes an indoor swimming pool, an indoor athletic center, and both indoor and outdoor tennis courts. There are also five fields for different sports, seven baseball or softball fields, and two skate parks. You can also find four outdoor basketball courts, two playgrounds, and a natural area with trails for walking or running. The first skate park opened in 1998, and a second one, made for beginners, was added in 2008.
Aquatic Center
The aquatic center has a large indoor 50-meter swimming pool. This pool is great for swimming laps or just having fun. Even when parts of the building were being fixed in 2014, the pool stayed open! The Aquatic Center is also home to different swimming groups, like the Tualatin Hills Synchronized Swimming Club.
Athletic Center
The athletic center is a big indoor space with six basketball courts. It also has an indoor running track. You can drop in and play sports like volleyball, badminton, and table tennis. This center often hosts special events, like the Portland Trail Blazers' Summer Hoops Camp.
Tennis Center
The tennis center has 15 tennis courts! There are six indoor courts and eight outdoor courts. The outdoor courts can even be covered in winter so you can play all year. There's also a special stadium court used only for big events. In 2016, important 2016 Davis Cup tennis matches between the United States and Croatia were held right here! The tennis center was renamed in August 2016 to honor Babette Horenstein, who was a board member for THPRD.
