A Look Back: History of the Complex

The complex first opened its doors in 1978. In 1993, it was renamed to honor Howard M. Terpenning. He was the General Manager for THPRD for many years, from 1959 until the end of 1992. Howard Terpenning passed away in 2014 at 83 years old.

Every year, the complex hosts a big three-part festival. This fun event usually happens in late July. It includes the Party in the Park, the Beaverton Cultural Festival, and a Family Triathlon.

Fun Places to Explore: Facilities

The Terpenning Recreation Complex has many cool places to visit. You can find an indoor pool, an indoor athletic center, and both indoor and outdoor tennis courts. There are also five fields for different sports and seven fields for baseball or softball. If you like to skate, there are two skate parks! You can also find four outdoor basketball courts, two playgrounds, and a natural area with walking trails.

Dive In: The Aquatic Center

The aquatic center has a large indoor swimming pool that is 50 meters long. This pool is perfect for swimming laps or just having fun. It also hosts different swimming clubs. For example, the Tualatin Hills Synchronized Swimming Club practices here.

Get Active: The Athletic Center

The athletic center is a great place to play sports indoors. It has six indoor basketball courts. There's also an indoor running track if you want to jog or walk. You can join in on drop-in sports like volleyball, badminton, and table tennis. The center also hosts special events, like the Portland Trail Blazers' Summer Hoops Camp.

Game, Set, Match: The Tennis Center

The tennis center has 15 tennis courts. Six of these courts are indoors. There are eight outdoor courts that get covered in the winter, so you can play all year. There's also a special stadium court used for big events. In July 2016, important 2016 Davis Cup matches between the United States and Croatia were held here. The tennis center was renamed in August 2016 to honor Babette Horenstein, who was a board member for THPRD.

More Outdoor Adventures

The first skate park at the complex opened in 1998. Later, in 2008, a second skate park was added. This newer park was designed especially for beginners. So, whether you're new to skating or a pro, there's a spot for you!
