The Howd-Linsley House is a very old and special home located in North Branford, Connecticut. It sits on Middletown Avenue in the Northford area. This house is thought to be one of the oldest buildings still standing in the entire town! It's a great example of how homes were built a long time ago. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Exploring the Howd-Linsley House

The Howd-Linsley House is in the northern part of North Branford. You can find it on the south side of Middletown Avenue, which is also Connecticut Route 17. It faces west towards a private road called Sol's Path. The house sits on about 2 acres of land.

What Does It Look Like?

This house is 2-1/2 stories tall and made of wood. It has a pointed roof and a big chimney in the middle. The outside is covered with wooden boards called clapboards. The back of the roof goes all the way down to the first floor. This gives the house a classic New England saltbox shape, which looks a bit like the boxes used to store salt long ago.

The front of the house has windows that aren't perfectly lined up. The main door is in the center. It has a simple frame and a small roof-like cover over it.

A Peek Inside

When you go inside, you can still see many of the original parts of the house. Some of the main wooden beams that hold the house up are visible. By looking at these, experts can figure out how the house was built over time.

How Old Is It?

No one knows the exact year the Howd-Linsley House was first built. However, its style suggests it was built in different stages during the 1700s. A main part of the house, including its huge chimney, was probably built early in that century. The part that sticks out in the back, called the leanto, was likely added later.

In 1928, the house was carefully fixed up. During this time, some parts that had been added in the 1800s were removed. This helped bring the house back to its older, original look.
