Howes is a small place in Missouri, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Howes is located in Dent County. You can find it about 4.5 miles (or about 7 kilometers) north of a bigger town called Salem, right along Missouri Route 19.
How Howes Got Its Name
Howes was named after a family who lived in the area, the Howe family. But for a while, it had a different name: Gano! This happened because of a postmaster (the person in charge of the post office) named Gano. He decided to use his own last name for the local post office. This was to avoid confusion with another nearby place called Howes Mill. The Gano post office opened in 1902 and closed its doors in 1923.
