History of Huánuco

The city of Huánuco was first started by a Spanish explorer named Gómez de Alvarado in 1539. It was built near an Inca town called Wanako, which belonged to the Yarowilca group.
A long time ago, during the Inca Empire, Huánuco was an important place. It was known for providing special young women, called Aclla nuns, for the capital city of Cusco.
Later, in 1541, the city was moved to where it is today, in the Pillco Valley.
