Hubig's Pies, sometimes called Hubig's New Orleans Style Pies, are a famous brand of fruit and sweet-filled fried pies. They are made by the Simon Hubig Pie Company in New Orleans, Louisiana. These tasty pies were not available for a while after a big fire destroyed their factory in 2012. But don't worry, the company brought them back in 2022!

The Story of Hubig's Pies

The story of Hubig's Pies began with Simon Hubig. He was born in a region called Basque Country in Spain. After serving in World War I, he moved to the United States.

Simon Hubig started his pie company in Fort Worth, Texas in 1922. He used the baking skills he learned from his mother's bakery. Over the next few years, his company grew and opened nine locations across the Southeastern United States. The New Orleans bakery, which became the most famous, also opened in 1922.

During a tough time called the Great Depression, many businesses struggled. All of Hubig's locations had to close except for the New Orleans bakery. This one kept making money! The New Orleans bakery stayed in the same spot on Dauphine Street in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood for many years.

The way Hubig's Pies were made didn't change much over time. For a long time, besides their famous hand-held pies (like a turnover), they also made bigger pies for families.

Hubig's Pies often gave fresh products to charities in the area. The jail in Orleans Parish was one of their biggest customers! The bakery mostly relied on people doing the work by hand, not on machines.

Meet Savory Simon

Savory Simon is the fun mascot for Hubig's Pies. You could often see him on the pie packages and in their advertisements. He's a friendly face that represents the brand.

Facing Challenges: Hurricane Katrina and a Fire

In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. The Hubig's bakery was damaged, with problems to its air system, an outside wall, and the roof. Because of this, they had to stop making pies.

It took more than four months for production to start again, on January 4, 2006. This was after the neighborhood had clean water, electricity, and gas. After the storm, Hubig's pies cost a little more, and they offered some different flavors. They used to make about 30,000 hand-sized pies every day!

Then, on July 27, 2012, a big fire broke out at the bakery. Flames were seen early in the morning, and the fire grew very large, destroying the factory. Luckily, no one was hurt.

For a while, it seemed like the pies might not come back. The owners faced challenges in rebuilding. But fans of Hubig's Pies kept hoping for their return.

The Long-Awaited Comeback

Finally, on July 18, 2019, exciting news arrived! It was announced that Hubig's Pies would start making pies again in 2020 from a new factory in Jefferson Parish.

In November 2022, the company shared that they were hiring new workers. This was a clear sign that the pies were truly coming back! Later that same month, Hubig's Pies officially returned to stores, making many people in New Orleans very happy.
