The Story of Huck and Jim
The story of Huckleberry no Bōken continues from another book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. At the end of that book, Huck is adopted by Widow Douglas. She takes him in after he helps save her life.
Huck's New Life
In Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Widow Douglas tries to teach Huck how to live a more "civilized" life. This means learning manners and going to school. But Huck is used to being free and living his own way.
Huck's father, who is not a good parent, kidnaps him. Huck is very clever and manages to trick everyone into thinking he has died. He then escapes to an island called Jackson's Island.
Escaping to Freedom
On Jackson's Island, Huck meets Jim. Jim is a slave who belongs to Miss Watson, the Widow Douglas's sister. Jim has run away because he found out Miss Watson plans to sell him. Selling a person meant they would be sent far away and forced to work.
Huck and Jim build a raft together. They travel down the Mississippi River on their raft. Jim hopes to find freedom from slavery, which was a terrible system where people were treated as property. Huck is looking for freedom from his father and from the strict rules of his foster parent. Their journey is full of adventures and challenges.
