Huffton, South Dakota facts for kids
Huffton is a small, quiet place in Brown County, South Dakota. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.
The Story of Huffton
Huffton has an interesting past! It was first started around 1880 and was originally called Foxton. Imagine what it was like back then, with new settlers arriving and building homes.
A few years later, in 1882, a special building opened: a post office! This was a very important place where people could send and receive letters and packages. This post office was named Huffton, and it stayed open for a long time, until 1962.
The name Huffton was chosen to honor one of the very first people to settle in the area, a man named D. J. Huff. So, the community's name keeps his memory alive!
