Hugh of Chalon (also known as Hugues; 1220–1266) was an important figure in the Middle Ages. He became the Count of Burgundy through his marriage to Adelaide, Countess of Burgundy. This type of title, gained through marriage, is called jure uxoris. Hugh was only 16 years old when he married Adelaide on November 1, 1236.
Hugh's father was John, Count of Chalon. His mother was Mahat, who was the daughter of Hugh III, Duke of Burgundy.
Hugh's Family and Children
Hugh and Adelaide had many children together. Their family was part of the powerful House of Ivrea.
Here are some of their children:
- Otto IV, Count of Burgundy (born 1248): He later became the Count of Burgundy after his mother.
- Hugh (lived around 1312): He was known as the Lord of Montbrison and Aspremont. He married Bonne, the daughter of Amadeus V, Count of Savoy.
- Étienne (died 1299)
- Reginald of Burgundy (died 1322): He became the Count of Montbéliard through his marriage to Guillemette of Neufchâtel.
- Henri
- Jean (died 1302): He was the Lord of Montaigu.
- Alix: She became a nun at Fontevraud Abbey.
- Elisabeth (died 1275): She married Count Hartmann V of Kyburg.
- Hippolyte: She was the Lady of Saint-Vallier. She married Count Aymar IV of Poitiers and Diois.
- Guyonne of Burgundy (died 1316): She married Thomas III of Piedmont.
- Marguerite: She also became a nun at Fontevraud Abbey.
- Agnès: She was the Lady of Saint-Aubin. She married Count Philippe II de Vienne, Lord of Pagny.
What Happened After Hugh's Death?
Hugh passed away in 1266. About a year later, his wife Adelaide remarried to Philip I, Count of Savoy. After Adelaide, the title of Count of Burgundy went to her son, Otto. Otto was one of the children she had with Hugh.
