Who Was Sir Hugh Bethell?
His Early Life and Military Service
Hugh Bethell was born on October 1, 1615. He was the oldest son of Hugh Bethell and Ellen Johnston. His family lived in a place called Rise.
When he was older, Hugh Bethell joined the army. He became a captain in the parliamentary army by 1643. Later, he rose to the rank of colonel. He led a group of soldiers in a big battle called Marston Moor. During this battle, he was injured and lost an eye.
After his time as a soldier, Hugh Bethell took on important jobs in his local area. He helped manage the military and was in charge of Scarborough Castle from about 1649 to 1651. He also became a J.P. for the East Riding of Yorkshire. This meant he helped keep law and order. From 1652 to 1653, he was the High Sheriff of Yorkshire, which was another important local role.
His Political Career
In 1654, Hugh Bethell was elected to the House of Commons. He represented the East Riding of Yorkshire in the First Protectorate Parliament. He was re-elected for the same area in 1656.
In 1659, his father passed away, and Hugh Bethell inherited the family estates. He continued to be involved in politics. He even helped stop a small uprising in York in 1660. This happened when a leader named John Lambert escaped from the Tower of London. Hugh Bethell quickly arrested the people involved and prevented any serious trouble.
In April 1660, Hugh Bethell was elected as a Member of Parliament for two different places: Beverley and Hedon. He chose to represent Hedon in the Convention Parliament. After September 1660, he was given the title of 'Sir', becoming Sir Hugh Bethell.
He was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Hedon in 1661. This time, he served in the Cavalier Parliament. He also took on other important roles, like helping to manage local corporations and serving as a Deputy Lieutenant for the East Riding from 1670.
Later Life and Family
Sir Hugh Bethell was re-elected as MP for Hedon twice in 1679. However, he passed away on October 3, 1679, at the age of 64, before the second Parliament could meet. He was buried in Rise, where his family lived.
Sir Hugh Bethell married Mary Mitchellbourne in 1641. They had a son and a daughter. Sadly, both his son and grandson died before him. Because of this, his family estates went to his nephew, who was also named Hugh. This nephew also became a Member of Parliament for Hedon later on.
