Hugo Batalla Parentini (born July 11, 1926 – died October 3, 1998) was an important Uruguayan politician. He served as the Vice President of Uruguay from 1995 to 1998. This was during the time when Julio María Sanguinetti was president.

Early Life and Political Start

Hugo Batalla began his political journey with the Colorado Party. He worked alongside another well-known politician named Zelmar Michelini.

Batalla was elected as a diputado for the city of Montevideo. A diputado is like a representative or a member of parliament. He served in this role from 1962 to 1966 and again from 1967 to 1971. He even became the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Uruguay from 1969 to 1970.

He was also involved in international politics. He was a member of the Latin American Parliament and served as its Vice-President from 1968 to 1969.

Changes in His Political Path

In 1971, Hugo Batalla left the Colorado Party. He helped create a new political group called the Frente Amplio with Zelmar Michelini. He was re-elected as a diputado in 1972. However, his term ended in June 1973 when a military government took over Uruguay.

After Uruguay returned to a democratic government, Batalla was elected as a senator. A senator is another type of elected official, usually serving in a higher legislative body. He served as a senator from 1985 to 1995 for the Partido por el Gobierno del Pueblo (People's Government Party). This party later joined the Frente Amplio again. During 1993, he was also the Vice-President of the Chamber of Senators.

Becoming Vice President

For the elections held on November 27, 1994, Hugo Batalla rejoined the Colorado Party. He was then elected as the Vice President of Uruguay.

Sadly, he passed away while still in office on October 3, 1998, at the age of 72. He died from lung cancer.

About the Vice Presidency

Hugo Batalla was the eleventh person to hold the office of Vice President of Uruguay. This important position was first created in 1934. Alfredo Navarro was the very first Vice President of Uruguay.

Other Activities and Interests

Besides his political career, Hugo Batalla was also involved in other areas. He started a newspaper called Hechos and a political magazine named Zeta.

He also had a passion for football (soccer)! He was the President of the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF), which is Uruguay's Football Association, from 1991 to 1993. He also served as the Vice-president of the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (CSF), the South American Football Confederation, between 1992 and 1993.

Family Life

Hugo Batalla married Hilda Flores in 1953. They had one daughter together, named Laura.
