About Hugo Travers
Early Life and School
Hugo Travers was born in Versailles, France, on April 6, 1997. His father is British and works in marketing, while his mother works in human resources. Hugo finished high school with a special diploma in economics and social sciences.
In 2015, he started studying at Sciences Po Paris, a famous university in France. He graduated in 2020 with a master's degree in communications. From a young age, Hugo knew he wanted to become a journalist.
His Career Journey
Starting with RadioLondres
In 2012, while still in school, Hugo started a website called "RadioLondres." This website shared news about current events. The name "RadioLondres" was inspired by a Twitter trend during the 2012 French presidential election. People used a hashtag to share election results even when it was supposed to be a quiet period before the official announcement.
HugoDécrypte: His YouTube Channel
In 2015, during his first year at university, Hugo created his YouTube channel, "HugoDécrypte." His goal was to make short videos that explained the news in a journalistic way for young people.
Over the years, Hugo has interviewed many important people. He spoke with candidates running for the French presidential election in 2017. He also interviewed candidates for the European Parliament election in 2019. He even had the chance to interview the French President, Emmanuel Macron, in May 2019.
In March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic began, Hugo started a daily video series called "Point Coronavirus." This series kept people updated on the pandemic. Soon, he started covering all kinds of news, and the series was renamed "Actus du Jour" (News of the Day). This daily news show, also available as a podcast, is still very popular today.
By September 2021, the HugoDécrypte channel had a team of thirteen staff members. This team grew to 20 by 2023, and as of 2024, there are 25 employees, mostly young journalists.
In September 2021, Hugo was commenting live on a political debate between two politicians, Éric Zemmour and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, which was shown on BFM TV. Because he was livestreaming their broadcast, BFM TV reported him. This led to a temporary 48-hour ban on Hugo's channel. Even one of the politicians, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, supported Hugo and other streamers.
On September 4, 2023, Hugo interviewed President Emmanuel Macron again. They talked about the future of French education, especially about a rule regarding the abaya in schools. This interview, titled "What is the future for young people," was shown live on YouTube and TikTok.
Most recently, on April 17, 2024, Hugo traveled to Ukraine to interview President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the Russo-Ukrainian War.
Other Projects: Mashup and Elan
On January 13, 2022, Hugo started a weekly talk show called "Mashup" on Twitch.
Then, on March 31, 2024, he launched a new digital media company called "Elan." This company focuses on helping young people learn about different jobs and find work. Elan also has a job search platform for young people. It started with content on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn, with plans to grow even more.
Television Appearances
Hugo Travers has also appeared on television. During the 2017 French presidential election, he was a commentator on the TV channel LCI.
In March 2019, he took part in a debate with Marine Le Pen on the show L’Émission politique on France 2. They discussed the topic of "fake news."
He also debated Sarah El Haïry, who was a government official for youth, on BFM TV. They talked about how university closures during the COVID-19 pandemic affected students.
Since October 2023, Hugo has hosted his own interview show on France 2 called HugoDécrypte : L'interview face cachée. This show features longer interviews, about 30 minutes each. It is part of a plan by the public broadcaster France Télévisions to create more content that appeals to young people.
