Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Huguette Delavault (born January 15, 1924, died April 2, 2003) was a smart French mathematician. She was really good at mathematical physics, which is a field that uses math to understand how the world works, like how heat moves or how electricity behaves.

Her Journey in Math

Huguette was born in Andilly, Charente-Maritime, France. Her parents were both teachers. She loved learning! She went to a special school for teachers in La Rochelle, France from 1940 to 1943. After that, she studied at another important school called the École normale supérieure de Fontenay-aux-Roses. In 1952, she passed a tough exam called the agrégation in mathematics. This meant she was officially qualified to teach math at a high level. Huguette then became a researcher at CNRS, a big French science organization, from 1952 to 1958. While working, she also earned her doctorate in mathematics in 1957 from the University of Paris. Her research looked at how to use special math tools, like the Laplace transform and Hankel transform, to solve problems about heat and electricity. She used something called cylindrical coordinates to help with her calculations. In 1958, she became a researcher at the University of Rennes. She worked hard and became a full professor there in 1962. Later, in 1970, she moved to the École nationale supérieure d'ingénieurs de Caen, where she also taught as a professor. She retired in 1984. Huguette Delavault passed away on April 2, 2003.

Helping Women in Science

Huguette was not just a brilliant mathematician; she was also a champion for women. From 1976, she worked hard to help women get into science and math. She wanted them to have the same chances as men in universities and in jobs. She was the deputy director of the École normale supérieure de Fontenay-aux-Roses from 1976 to 1980. She was also the president of the French association for university women twice. This shows how dedicated she was to helping other women succeed.

Awards and Special Honors

Huguette Delavault received several important awards for her amazing work and contributions:

  • In 1967, she became an officer in the Order of Academic Palms. This award recognizes people who have done great things in education and science.
  • In 1971, she became a chevalier (which means knight) in the French National Order of Merit. This is a high honor given for special achievements.
  • In 1995, she was made a chevalier in the Legion of Honour. This is one of France's highest awards, given to people for outstanding service to the country.
