Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Huixing (Chinese: 惠興, 1871–1905) was an important person from the Qing dynasty in China. She helped start schools and fought for girls' rights. She was part of the Manchu people.

Who Was Huixing?

Huixing lived during a time when China was facing many changes. She believed that modern education was the key to helping her country. She especially wanted girls to go to school. Back then, most girls could only learn at schools run by Western missionaries. There were very few Chinese schools for girls.

Early Life and Challenges

Huixing's father and husband were both officers in the Manchu government. Sadly, she became a widow in 1889. This meant her husband had passed away. Even with this challenge, Huixing was determined to make a difference.

Fighting for Girls' Education

Huixing strongly believed that modern education could help China solve its problems. She saw that girls in China did not have many chances to get an education. She wanted to change this. She worked hard to create new opportunities for them.

Opening the Zhenwen School

Huixing worked hard to raise money for a new school. In 1904, she opened the Zhenwen Girls' School in Hangzhou. This was a very important step. It was one of the first schools of its kind for girls in China. It showed that Chinese people could also provide modern education for girls.

The School's End

Sadly, the Zhenwen Girls' School ran into problems. It ran out of money. Huixing asked the government for help, but they did not give her any funds. Because of this, the school had to close. Huixing passed away shortly after. Even though the school closed, her efforts were a big step forward for girls' education in China.
