Huiyuan on the Stock Market
Joining the Hong Kong Stock Exchange
In February 2007, China Huiyuan Juice Group became a public company. This meant its shares could be bought and sold on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Before this happened, some big investment companies put money into Huiyuan. These included Groupe Danone and Warburg Pincus.
Changes in Ownership
Later, in 2009, Warburg Pincus sold its shares to other investors. Then, in 2010, Danone also sold its part of Huiyuan. Danone's 23 percent share was bought by a private investment group from Hong Kong called SAIF.
Coca-Cola's Attempt to Buy Huiyuan
A Big Offer
On September 3, 2008, The Coca-Cola Company made a very big offer to buy China Huiyuan Juice. Coca-Cola's subsidiary, Atlantic Industries, offered HK$17.9 billion for the company. This was about HK$12.20 for each share of Huiyuan. This price was much higher than what Huiyuan's shares were worth the day before.
Government Review and Decision
This proposed sale was a very large deal. Because of its size, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce had to review it. They needed to make sure the deal would not harm fair competition in the market. This review was set to finish by March 20, 2009.
However, on March 17, 2009, news came out that Coca-Cola might give up on the deal. This was because Chinese authorities had concerns about the Huiyuan brand name after the purchase. On March 18, the Ministry of Commerce officially stopped the deal. They said it was because of worries about market competition.
