The community was named after David Hull, who was the original owner of the land where Hull Prairie was established.

A post office, which was a very important place for sending and receiving mail, was opened in Hull Prairie in 1862. This post office served the community for many years, helping people communicate and stay connected. It continued to operate for over four decades before it finally closed its doors in 1905.
