Humay Chehrzad facts for kids

Humay-ē Chehrzad was a legendary queen who ruled ancient Iran for about 32 years. She was the daughter of King Kay Bahman. Her story is part of the rich history and legends of the Kayanian dynasty.
Becoming Queen
King Bahman became very sick when Humay was six months pregnant. He knew he was going to die soon. So, he decided to make Humay the temporary ruler until her child was born. After King Bahman passed away, Humay became the queen of Iran.
A Hidden Son
After she became queen, Humay gave birth to a son. She named him Kai Darab. For eight months, she kept her son a secret. Eventually, she placed baby Darab in a box. She then set the box to float down the Euphrates River. A dyer, who was someone who colored fabrics, found Darab. He saved the baby and raised him as his own son.
Defending the Empire
During Humay's time as queen, an army from the Roman Empire attacked the western parts of Iran. Queen Humay sent her army to fight them. A general named Rashnwad led the Iranian army. During this fight, General Rashnwad found Darab. He recognized Darab as Queen Humay's child. After defeating the Romans, they returned to the capital city. Humay then decided to step down from her rule. After 32 years as queen, she gave the throne to her son, Darab.
