Discover the Humboldt Public Library

The Humboldt Public Library is a free public library. This means anyone can visit and use its resources. It is located in the town of Humboldt, Iowa. The library has served the community for many years.

A Special Gift for the Community

The idea for the library started with a generous gift. On December 13, 1906, the library received $10,000. This money came from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. This organization was founded by Andrew Carnegie, a very wealthy businessman. He gave money to build many libraries across the United States.

Building the Library

The library building was designed by a company called Hallett & Rawson. They were architects from Des Moines, Iowa. Construction on the library began in 1908. The building was made using limestone. This stone came from a nearby area now called Taft Park. The library was officially opened on February 9, 1909.

The building has a unique look. Its stone walls have a rough texture. The columns at the entrance are in a style called "Tuscan order." These features give the library a rustic and classic appearance.

A Historic Landmark

The Humboldt Public Library is recognized as an important building. In 1983, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Being on this list helps protect the building.

In 1992, the library was made even bigger. A new entrance was added on the north side. An extension was also built to provide more space. This helped the library continue to serve the growing community.
