Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Humphrey Orme (born 1620 – died March 2, 1671) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the government in England. He served there in 1654 and again from 1660 until he died in 1671.

Early Life and Family

Humphrey Orme was born in 1620. He was the son of Humphrey Orme and Mary Orme, who lived in Peterborough. His mother, Mary, was the daughter of another Humphrey Orme from Somerset.

Joining Politics

Even though his grandfather was a strong Royalist (someone who supported the King), Humphrey Orme chose to support the Parliament. Parliament was a group of people who wanted to have more say in how the country was run, rather than just the King.

In 1650, Orme helped Parliament by being a commissioner. This meant he helped raise money for Parliament in an area called Northamptonshire.

First Time in Parliament

In 1654, Humphrey Orme was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Peterborough. This was during a time called the First Protectorate Parliament. Being an MP meant he helped make decisions for the country.

Later Political Career

Humphrey Orme continued his work in politics.

Re-elected to Parliament

In 1660, Orme was elected again as an MP for Peterborough. This time, it was for a group called the Convention Parliament. He was even suggested to become a "Knight of the Royal Oak," which was a special honor.

He was elected one more time in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament. He kept his seat in Parliament until he passed away.

Personal Life

Humphrey Orme married Mary Apreece. She was the widow of Robert Apreece. Mary's father was Sir Henry Bedingfield, 1st Baronet from Norfolk.

Orme died when he was 50 years old.
