Paston-Bedingfeld baronets facts for kids
The Bedingfeld family, later known as Paston-Bedingfeld, has a special title called a Baronetcy. This title is from Oxburgh in Norfolk, England. A Baronetcy is a bit like being a knight, but it's passed down through the family. It's part of the Baronetage of England, which is a list of these special titles.
The first Baronet, Sir Henry Bedingfeld, received this title on January 2, 1660. He was a cavalier, which means he supported King Charles I during the English Civil War. He fought as a captain in the King's army. After the war, he was given the Baronetcy to make up for the money and property he lost helping the King. The Bedingfeld family is believed to have come from a Norman named 'Ogerlis' who owned land in Bedingfield, Suffolk around the year 1100. Later, a family member named Edmund Bedingfeld married Margaret. She brought important lands, including the manor of Oxburgh in Norfolk, into the family.
Over time, the family name changed. The sixth Baronet, Sir Henry Richard Bedingfeld, married Margaret Anne Paston. In 1830, he added "Paston" to his last name, making it Paston-Bedingfeld. The eighth Baronet, Sir Henry Edward Paston-Bedingfeld, was a Major in the army and served in the Second Boer War. Today, the current Baronet, Sir Henry Paston-Bedingfeld, is also a possible heir to a very old noble title called the barony of Grandison.
The family's main home is Oxburgh Hall, located near King's Lynn, Norfolk. This historic house is now looked after by the National Trust, which helps preserve important places for everyone to enjoy.
