Humphrey de Bohun, 7th Earl of Hereford facts for kids
Humphrey de Bohun was an important English nobleman who lived in the 1300s. He was born on March 25, 1342, and passed away on January 16, 1373. He held several important titles, including the 7th Earl of Hereford, 6th Earl of Essex, and 2nd Earl of Northampton. He was also a Knight of the Garter (KG), which is a very special award given by the King or Queen of England.
Humphrey was the son of William de Bohun, who was the 1st Earl of Northampton. His mother was Elizabeth de Badlesmere. He was also the grandson of another important person, Humphrey de Bohun, 3rd Earl of Hereford. His grandmother, Elizabeth of Rhuddlan, was a daughter of King Edward I of England.
Becoming an Earl
Humphrey became the Earl of Hereford after his uncle, Humphrey de Bohun, 6th Earl of Hereford, died without having any children. This meant that Humphrey inherited the title and the lands that came with it.
Life and Family
Humphrey de Bohun married Joan Fitzalan. She was the daughter of Richard Fitzalan, who was the 10th Earl of Arundel, and Eleanor of Lancaster. They got married sometime after September 9, 1359.
Humphrey took part in a historical event called the sack of Alexandria in 1365. This happened after King Peter I of Cyprus visited England.
His Daughters
When Humphrey de Bohun died, he had two daughters who survived him. They inherited his large estates, which were his lands and properties. However, his titles, like "Earl of Hereford," went into a special state called "abeyance." This means the titles were put on hold because there was no male heir to inherit them directly.
His daughters were:
- Eleanor de Bohun: She was born in 1366 and died on October 3, 1399. Eleanor married Thomas of Woodstock, 1st Duke of Gloucester. He was the youngest son of King Edward III. Eleanor was the mother of Anne of Gloucester.
- Mary de Bohun: She married Henry Bolingbroke. He later became King Henry IV of England.
- Elizabeth de Bohun: She died when she was very young.
