Mary de Bohun lived from about 1369 or 1370 to 1394. She was the first wife of Henry Bolingbroke, who later became King Henry IV of England. Mary was also the mother of the famous King Henry V of England.
Mary never became queen because she passed away before her husband took the throne.
Her Early Life
Mary was born to Humphrey de Bohun, 7th Earl of Hereford and his wife, Joan Fitzalan. Her mother, Joan, was the daughter of Richard FitzAlan, 10th Earl of Arundel.
Mary and her older sister, Eleanor de Bohun, were their father's only children. This meant they would inherit his large properties and wealth.
Eleanor married Thomas of Woodstock, who was the youngest son of King Edward III. Thomas wanted to control all of the family's wealth. He tried to make young Mary become a nun, so she could not marry and have children who would share the inheritance.
However, Mary's aunt helped her escape. She took Mary from Thomas's castle and brought her back to Arundel. There, Mary was soon married to Henry Bolingbroke.
Her Marriage and Children
Mary married Henry Bolingbroke on 5 February 1381. Their wedding took place at Arundel Castle.
Mary gave birth to her first child, the future King Henry V of England, on 16 September 1386. He was born at Monmouth Castle, which belonged to her husband.
Her second child, Thomas of Lancaster, Duke of Clarence, was born in London around November 1387.
Mary and Henry had six children in total:
- Henry V, King of England (1386–1422)
- Thomas of Lancaster, Duke of Clarence (1387–1421)
- John of Lancaster, Duke of Bedford (1389–1435)
- Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester (1390–1447)
- Blanche of England (1392–1409), who later married Louis III, Elector Palatine
- Philippa of England (1394–1430), who later married Eric of Pomerania, the King of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
Her Death
Mary de Bohun died on 4 June 1394 at Peterborough Castle. She passed away while giving birth to her youngest daughter, Philippa.
Mary was buried on 6 July 1394. Her resting place is in the collegiate Church of the Annunciation of Our Lady of the Newarke in Leicester.
