Sir Humphry Thomas Tollemache (born August 10, 1897 – died March 30, 1990) was a very important officer in the Royal Marines. He held the rank of Major General. He was also a baronet, which is a special inherited title.

Early Life and Military Start

Humphry Tollemache was born in Eastbourne, Sussex. His father was Sir Lyonel Tollemache, who was also a baronet. Humphry went to school at Eastbourne College.

He joined the Royal Marines in 1915. This was during the First World War. From 1916 to 1918, he served with the Grand Fleet. This was the main fleet of the Royal Navy. Later, from 1929 to 1931, he worked as an Adjutant at the Royal Marines Depot. This means he helped with administrative tasks. He also served as a brigade major from 1936 to 1939.

Second World War Service

During the Second World War, Humphry Tollemache worked mostly at the Admiralty. This was the government department in charge of the Royal Navy. On December 13, 1941, he was promoted to acting lieutenant colonel.

He had many important jobs during the war. He commanded Royal Marine groups in the Middle East and the Far East. From 1943 to 1944, he led the 3 Mobile Naval Base Brigade. This group helped set up naval bases. From 1944 to 1945, he commanded the Small Operations Group (SOG). This group carried out special missions.

After the War and Retirement

After the war ended, Tollemache continued his service. From 1946 to 1947, he was the Commander of the Royal Marines Depot. He then became the Director of Pay and Records Office for the Royal Marines.

He was promoted to major general on November 24, 1949. From 1949 until he retired in 1952, he was the General Officer Commanding the Portsmouth Group, Royal Marines. He received two important awards for his service. In 1950, he became a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1952, he was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath.

Personal Life and Family

Humphry Tollemache married Nora Priscilla Taylor in 1926. They had two sons and two daughters together.

When his brother, Cecil, passed away in 1969, Humphry became the 6th Baronet of the Tollemache family. He is buried at St Peter's Church, Petersham. This village has a long history with his family.
