Hunnewell is a small, quiet place in Greenup County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's what we call an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially part of a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the county.

A Look Back: Hunnewell's History

How Hunnewell Got Its Name

Hunnewell started as a stop along the Eastern Kentucky Railway. This was a special train line that helped people and goods move around. The community was named after one of the railway's important founders, a person named H.H. Hunnewell.

Before the railway came through, this area was known as the Greenup Furnace community. A "furnace" here refers to a place where metal was made. When the railway arrived, the community was renamed Hunnewell Furnace.

Post Office and a Big Storm

A post office was opened in Hunnewell in 1874. This was a place where people could send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years, finally closing its doors in 1950.

In 1922, Hunnewell faced a very challenging time. A powerful tornado, one of the largest ever seen in Kentucky, caused a lot of damage to the community. Despite the challenges, the spirit of Hunnewell continued.
