What is Hurricane Andres?

Hurricane Andres was a powerful tropical cyclone. It was the first storm to get a name in the 2009 Pacific hurricane season. It started as a tropical depression on June 21, 2009. A tropical depression is a storm with winds less than 39 miles per hour (63 km/h).

How Hurricane Andres Formed

The storm began to form off the coast of Mexico. It grew stronger very quickly. By June 22, it became a tropical storm. This means its winds were between 39 and 73 miles per hour (63-118 km/h). Later that same day, it turned into a hurricane.

Andres Reaches Peak Strength

When Andres became a hurricane, its winds reached about 80 miles per hour (130 km/h). This made it a Category 1 hurricane. Category 1 is the lowest level on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. At its strongest, the storm had a central pressure of 984 millibars.

Hurricane Andres Weakens

After reaching its peak strength, Hurricane Andres began to lose power. On the morning of June 24, it weakened back into a tropical storm. This happened very fast. The storm continued to get weaker throughout the day.

Andres Becomes a Tropical Depression

By the afternoon of June 24, Andres was no longer a tropical storm. It had weakened even more. It became a tropical depression again. This meant its winds were much slower. Soon after, the storm started to break apart. It completely disappeared shortly after.

Impact of Hurricane Andres

Even though Hurricane Andres weakened quickly, it still affected some areas. It brought heavy rains and strong winds to parts of Mexico. These conditions can be very dangerous.

Damage and Fatalities

The storm caused some damage in Mexico. Sadly, five people died because of Hurricane Andres. This shows how dangerous even weakening storms can be. It is important to stay safe during any tropical storm or hurricane.
