What the Movie is About
This film tells a story set during World War II. It focuses on four young friends living on the Pacific Coast of the United States. They often play games pretending to be soldiers.
A Surprise Visitor
One day, the boys are playing on the beach. They find a Japanese soldier who has washed ashore. He is wounded and separated from his submarine. The boys decide to capture him. They think this will make them heroes.
War Comes Home
Even though the war feels far away, its effects start to reach their town. One of the boys, Duke Cooper, has an older brother fighting overseas. Families in town begin to receive sad news about their loved ones.
Friendship Tested
Duke's friend, Willie Tanaka, is Japanese American. Because of the war, Willie and his family face unfair treatment. They are soon sent to a special camp. This was a difficult time for many Japanese American families during World War II. The movie shows how these events affect the boys' friendship and their understanding of the world.
