Club History and Achievements
IFK Luleå first began in 1900. However, the club stopped playing for a few years. In 1920, another sports club called IK Gyltzau won a championship in bandy (a sport similar to ice hockey). This club then changed its name to IFK Luleå.
The revived IFK Luleå continued to play bandy for many years. They won the bandy championship again in 1932 and 1934.
Playing in Sweden's Top Leagues
In 1971, IFK Luleå played for one season in the Allsvenskan. This is the highest level of football in Sweden. Even though they started well, their time there was short. They were moved down to a lower league at the end of that season.
In the late 1980s and most of the 1990s, the club had a great time. They played in Division 1 Norra, which was the second-highest league in Sweden back then.
Recent League Journeys
Over the last ten years, IFK Luleå has mostly played in Division 2 Norrland. This is now the fourth level of the Swedish football league system. From 2006 to 2009, they finished in second place four times in a row. This meant they just missed out on moving up to a higher league.
In 2010, with a new coach named Fredrik Waara, they finally won their league. This victory allowed them to move up to Division 1 Norra. They finished tenth in that league for the next two seasons.
The club is connected to the Norrbottens Fotbollförbund, which is the local football association.
