"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is a very popular Christmas song. It was written by British songwriter Tommie Connor. The song was first recorded by American singer Jimmy Boyd in 1952. Many famous musicians have performed this song over the years. These include The Ronettes, Jackson 5, Jessica Simpson, John Mellencamp, and Amy Winehouse.
The First Recording by Jimmy Boyd
Jimmy Boyd recorded the original version of the song on July 15, 1952. He was only 13 years old at the time. His recording quickly became a huge hit. It reached the number one spot on the Billboard pop singles chart in December 1952. It also topped the Cash Box chart early the next year. In November 1953, the song reached number three in the UK Singles Chart.
The famous department store Saks Fifth Avenue asked for this song to be written. They wanted to use it to promote their Christmas card for that year. The card featured a special drawing by artist Perry Barlow. He was well-known for his drawings in The New Yorker magazine.
The song tells a funny story from a child's point of view. On Christmas Eve, the child sneaks downstairs from their bedroom. They see their mom kissing "Santa Claus" under the mistletoe. The song ends with the child wondering how their dad will react to this kiss. Of course, the child doesn't realize that "Santa Claus" is probably just their own father dressed up in a costume!
The Movie Version
A movie based on the song was made for television. This film was released in 2001.
