Iago Herrerín's Football Journey
Starting Out at Athletic Bilbao
Iago Herrerín was born in Bilbao, Biscay, Spain. He grew up playing football in the youth teams of Athletic Bilbao. This is where many young players learn to become professional footballers.
He played for a short time with a team called CD Basconia. Then, in January 2007, he was loaned to Barakaldo CF. After that, he joined Athletic Bilbao's reserve team.
Playing for Atlético Madrid
In July 2010, Iago decided to try something new. He left Athletic Bilbao and signed a contract with Atlético Madrid. He played for their reserve team, Atlético Madrid B, for two full seasons.
On January 8, 2011, something exciting happened. In a game against Getafe CF B, Iago scored a goal! This was very unusual for a goalkeeper. His goal helped his team win 3–2.
Returning to Athletic Bilbao
Iago came back to Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2012. He signed a two-year deal. Right away, he was loaned to CD Numancia for a whole season. He played his first game in the Segunda División on August 19, where his team won 2–0.
In July 2013, Iago signed a new contract with Athletic Bilbao. He joined the main team. On August 23, he played his first game in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. He helped his team win 2–0 against CA Osasuna without letting in any goals. This is called a clean sheet. For his first year, he was the backup goalkeeper to Gorka Iraizoz.
During the 2014–15 season, Iago was the main goalkeeper for the Copa del Rey cup games. He helped his team reach the final of this important tournament. On May 25, 2015, he signed another contract with the club, which lasted until 2017.
In the 2015–16 season, Iago played in both domestic cup games and UEFA Europa League matches. He also played two league games when the main goalkeeper was suspended. On June 8, 2016, he extended his contract until 2019.
Later, another young goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, started playing more. So, on November 30, 2016, Iago was loaned to CD Leganés until the end of the season. He helped them out because their main goalkeeper was injured.
On January 19, 2018, Iago was back at Athletic Bilbao. In a game against Getafe CF, he gave away two penalties. But he saved the second one! The game ended in a 2–2 draw. A week before this, he had signed a new contract until 2021.
On January 7, 2019, Iago became the first-choice goalkeeper after Kepa Arrizabalaga left. In a game against RC Celta de Vigo, Iago made a long kick up the field. His teammate Iñaki Williams collected the ball and scored a goal. This made Iago the first goalkeeper in La Liga in the 21st century to get an assist! In his last two years at the club, he didn't play as much because of the rise of Unai Simón.
Playing in Saudi Arabia
On August 30, 2021, Iago Herrerín moved to Saudi Arabia. He joined a club called Al Raed FC. He played there for a season. On June 15, 2022, he left the club by agreement.
Short Time at Valencia
Iago joined Valencia CF on September 26, 2022. This was a short-term deal after their main goalkeeper got a serious knee injury. He played his first game for Valencia on January 3, 2023. It was a 3–0 win in the Spanish Cup. He played the last 13 minutes of the game.
Later Career Moves
On July 21, 2023, Iago Herrerín joined AEK Larnaca FC in Cyprus. He played alongside other Spanish players there. In the summer of 2024, he returned to Spain. He signed a contract with Primera Federación club Sestao River Club, where he plays now.
