Ian David McShane (born 29 September 1942) is a famous English actor. He is known for playing a wide variety of characters in movies and on television.
You might know him as the pirate Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides or as Winston Scott in the John Wick movies. He also won a Golden Globe Award for his role as Al Swearengen in the TV series Deadwood. For over 60 years, McShane has been a star on both the big and small screen.

Early Life and First Steps in Acting
Ian McShane was born in Blackburn, England, on September 29, 1942. His father, Harry McShane, was a professional soccer player from Scotland. McShane grew up near Manchester and went to Stretford Grammar School.
He discovered his love for acting as a member of the National Youth Theatre. He then studied at the famous Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). At RADA, he was classmates with future stars like Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt. McShane and Hurt became good friends and even shared an apartment.
While still a student, McShane got his first movie role in The Wild and the Willing (1962), acting alongside his friend John Hurt. The next year, he played Satan in a series of religious plays called the York Mystery Plays.
A Career on Stage and Screen
McShane quickly became a well-known actor in the United Kingdom. His most famous role in the UK was playing an antiques dealer in the popular TV series Lovejoy, which ran from 1986 to 1994. He also appeared in many other shows and movies, including Battle of Britain (1969).
Success in the United States
McShane also became a star in the United States. He is famous for playing the historical character Al Swearengen in the HBO series Deadwood. His performance was so good that he won a Golden Globe Award in 2005. He returned to this role for Deadwood: The Movie in 2019.
From 2017 to 2021, he played the mysterious Mr. Wednesday in the series American Gods.

Ian McShane has been married three times. He first married actress Suzan Farmer in 1965. After they divorced, he married Ruth Post, and they had two children, Kate and Morgan.
Since 1980, he has been married to American actress Gwen Humble. They live in Venice, California. McShane is also a grandfather to three grandchildren.
