History of Ibarlucea
How Ibarlucea Started
Around the late 1800s, the area where Ibarlucea now stands was known as Kilómetro 409. This name came from a train station that was built there in 1891. For 12 years, this spot was a small settlement. It grew around the train station, which was part of the railway line connecting Rosario to Tucumán. This railway line was called the Ferrocarril General Manuel Belgrano.
Founding the Town
The actual town of Ibarlucea was officially started in 1903. A woman named Rita Alcácer de Ybarlucea played a key role. She generously gave away land that used to belong to her late husband, Melitón Ybarlucea. The name "Ybarlucea" comes from the Basque language, where "ibar luzea" means "the long valley."
The land Rita donated was used for important public buildings. These included offices, streets, a town square, and a church.
Local Government
For some time, Ibarlucea was managed by a support group based in Rosario. But on April 5, 1915, the town got its own local government. This meant that Ibarlucea could then manage its own affairs and services.
