Dhil al-Ghimamah (ظل الغمامة) |
Ibn Abi al-Khisal (إبن أبي الخصال) was a very important person from a place called Al-Andalus. This was a part of Spain and Portugal ruled by Muslims long ago. His full name was Abū ʿAbdallāh Muḥammad ibn Masʿūd ibn Ṭayyib ibn Faraj ibn Khalaṣa al-Ghāfiqī al-Shaquri.
He was a talented secretary, a historian who wrote about the past, and a scholar who studied ḥadīth (sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad). He was also a skilled poet. People called him Dhu al-Wizaratayn (ذو الوزيرتين), which means 'holder of two important jobs'. This was a special title for top government officials in the medieval Islamic world. He passed away around 1146 AD.
About Ibn Abi al-Khisal
Ibn Abi al-Khisal was probably born in 1072. His birthplace was a small village called Las Gorgillitas, near Segura. He spent his early years there. His family name, al-Ghafiqi, shows he was connected to the Arab tribe of Ghafiq. This tribe had settled in Al-Andalus after coming with the army of Musa ibn Nusayr. The name al-Shaquri tells us he was from the Segura region (called shaqura in Arabic).
His Work as a Secretary
Ibn Abi al-Khisal first worked in the courts of local rulers, known as Taifa courts. Later, he moved to the big city of Cordoba. At that time, Cordoba was under the rule of the Almoravids.
He worked as a Katib (كاتب), which means 'secretary'. He served in the court of Muhammad ibn al-Hajj, who was the Almoravid governor of Cordoba. He worked alongside another famous secretary, Abu Muhammad ibn al-Sid.
Later in his life, Ibn Abi al-Khisal and his brother Abu Marwan became secretaries for the Almoravid ruler Ali ibn Yusuf. This was in Marrakesh, which was the capital city of the Almoravids.
Ibn Abi al-Khisal became one of the most respected secretaries of his time. He was known for his beautiful writing style. He was also a well-regarded scholar of Hadith. Because of his many talents, he earned the special title Dhu'l-wizaratayn. This title meant he held two important government roles, though we don't know exactly what those jobs were. He died in Cordoba in 1146 AD.
