The Ice Hockey Federation of the Republic of Azerbaijan is the main group that manages and promotes ice hockey in Azerbaijan. It helps organize the sport in the country. This federation is like the official leader for all things ice hockey in Azerbaijan.
How Ice Hockey Started in Azerbaijan
The Ice Hockey Federation of the Republic of Azerbaijan began in 1991. At that time, it was part of a bigger group called the Soviet Ice Hockey Federation. The Soviet Union was a large country that included Azerbaijan.
After the Soviet Union broke apart, Azerbaijan became an independent country. The Federation then joined the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) on May 6, 1992. The IIHF is the worldwide group that governs ice hockey.
Ice Hockey Today in Azerbaijan
Currently, there is no official national hockey league in Azerbaijan. This means there are no regular teams playing against each other in a league. Azerbaijan has also not yet played in any big IIHF tournaments, like the World Championships.
A big step for ice hockey in Azerbaijan happened in 2023. That year, the very first ice rink in the country opened. This new rink gives people a place to skate and play ice hockey. It is an important step for the sport to grow in Azerbaijan.
